DIRECTOR
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
The Director, Research and Development, will build and lead a multi-disciplinary team working across a variety of platforms and products providing technical and scientific direction and focus. This role will be involved in developing the strategic research objectives for the company and translating these efforts into revenue-generating products and services.
Responsibilities
Recruit, hire, and develop high-performing scientific staff across multiple scientific disciplines and skills
Lead, develop and execute strategic plans for R&D resulting in the creation of new products and services
Direct and manage multiple concurrent R&D projects while ensuring their success in meeting objectives and timelines
Manage the day-to-day operations of the department through cross-department collaboration with HR, Facilities, Finance, and others
Develop and manage budgets and timelines
Manage interactions with external vendors and service providers to ensure the company receives appropriate value and fit-for-purpose products and services
Work with external partners, licensors, and licensees to manage collaborative research projects that span organizations
Interface with clients in support of products and fee-for-service research and development projects
Evaluate new technologies for potential adoption and/or licensing
Lead the scientific aspects of grant applications to government and non-profit organizations
Support the development of new intellectual property and patent applications
Experience and skills
Bacterial and mammalian cell culture
Nucleic acid, protein, and antibody purifications
Gene design, synthesis, and cloning techniques
Bio-analytical method development, including chromatographic based methods, mass spectrometry methods, and biophysical and chemical characterization
Molecular biology techniques including PCR, ELISA, blotting, electrophoretic techniques, and cell counting
Proven track record of creative scientific achievement through publication and/or patents
Ability to creatively develop solutions for simple and complex problems
Proven track record of leading scientific staff
Ability to work on cross functional teams and apply influencing skills in a matrix environment
Ability to make decisions promptly; comfortable with ambiguity; strategic thinker
Strong written and oral communication skills
Education and work experience
Ph.D. or equivalent experience in biochemistry or related scientific field
5+ years of experience in biochemical research or related area
Track record of leading research collaborations with academia and industry
Experience leading teams, including direct supervision of scientific staff
